AI medical scribes promise to eliminate documentation burden — one of the leading causes of provider burnout. This review compares two leading tools: Charm AI (the AI built into Charm Health EHR) and Nabla, a standalone AI scribe. Both were tested in a live clinical environment.
Both tools work by listening to provider-patient conversations and generating structured clinical notes — SOAP notes, HPI, assessment and plan — automatically. The provider reviews, edits, and signs. The goal is to eliminate manual charting.
Charm AI integrates directly into Charm Health EHR, which makes it seamless for providers already using that platform. It generates notes that are well-formatted and generally accurate for straightforward visits. Complex cases require more editing.
Nabla is EHR-agnostic, meaning it works with any system. Its note quality is slightly higher in our testing — it captured more nuanced clinical details and required fewer corrections on complex cases. However, it requires copy-paste into your EHR, which adds a small workflow step.
AI scribes are one of the most clinically useful categories of healthcare AI available today. Both Charm AI and Nabla deliver on their core promise. For Charm Health users, Charm AI is the obvious choice. For other EHR platforms, Nabla is worth the extra workflow step.
Clinically SafeProviders who are spending more than 2 hours per day on documentation should strongly consider an AI scribe. Always obtain patient consent before recording. Review every note before signing — AI scribes are assistants, not final authors.
